Porcelain Veneers

What are Porcelain veneers?

Veneers are thin, layers shells of porcelain that are attached to the front surface of teeth, though they may also wrap around further. Traditionally veneers have always been made from ceramics such as porcelain or e.max but nowadays composite veneers are also become more popular as an alternative.

What are the benefits of porcelain veneers?

  1. Veneers can effectively repair and improve the shapes of teeth and correct minor crowding or gappy teeth.
  2. Porcelain veneers are more stain resistant and durable than alternatives such as composite veneers.
  3. Veneers enable a quick and guaranteed way to correct any minor discrepancies in tooth shape. Usually they are made of porcelain and are performed on  multiple teeth so that the shade and shape of the new teeth are kept uniform.
  4. Minor tooth alignment discrepancies can be camouflaged with porcelain veneers which could be of benefit particularly if you are not keen on having any orthodontic treatment.
  5. If there are any defects or deep staining which has occurred as the tooth has developed or it has been traumatised, it sometimes can be hard to mask with whitening or composite veneers. Similarly if the underlying enamel has been damaged, porcelain veneers can be used to improve the appearance shape and symmetry of your smile.

Things to be aware of?

  1. Porcelain veneers can be larger investment than other forms of smile makeover treatments such as composite bonding because as the veneers are bespokely crafted and processed in a specialised lab by a master ceramist.
  2. Usually there is some minor controlled tooth preparation. This is not to be confused with crowns where a full wrap of tooth is removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Occasionally there may be minor adjustments to the teeth, but this is minimal and planned depending on your smile design and starting point.

Alternative options to veneers are:

  • Composite bonding – bonding is a fast, non-invasive procedure which can usually be completed in a single appointment. A composite resin is attached to the tooth to restore its natural shape and colour.
  • Crowns – a crown is a tooth-shaped cap that’s placed over the entire visible portion of your tooth. A crown will feel and function just like any of your other teeth. And if you choose to have a ceramic porcelain crown, it will be virtually indistinguishable from your other teeth.
  • Orthodontics – fixed or removable braces can be used to straighten misaligned teeth and close gaps. Advances in orthodontics mean that braces can now be virtually invisible.

Veneers are easy to maintain – they simply require the same care as your other teeth. Regular brushing, flossing, dental check-ups and hygienist appointments will help keep your veneers looking good for years.
